Wedding Wednesday - Richard A Spalding's Marriages

Yesterday I focused on the graves of Richard Augustine Spalding and his wives.  Today I'll share the documentation for the three marriages of Richard Spalding that I found on the Family Search website.  They all took place in Washington County, Kentucky.

"Kentucky, County Marriages, 1797-1954," database with images, FamilySearch https://familysearch.org
"Richard Spalding and Henrietta Hamilton, July 28th" (1801), married by Michael Fournier.  He was 24 years old, she was 20.  I have their children as:
  1. Ann Constantia (1803-1858) first entered the Sisters of Loretto, then left to marry (1) Mr. Howell, (2) Thomas Hoskins Hamilton.
  2. Julia (1805-1857) became Mother Perpetua of the Sisters of Loretto
  3. Leonard Augustine (1806-1888) married (1) Katherine Lancaster, (2) Elizabeth Shadburne
  4. Richard Marcus (1808-1888) married Mary Jane Lancaster
  5. Martin John (1810-1872)  became the Archbishop of Baltimore
  6. Benedict Joseph (1812-1868) became Administrator of the Diocese of Louisville
  7. Clement (1814-1837) died unmarried at age 23, he predeceased his father
Henrietta died December 3, 1816.

"Kentucky, County Marriages, 1797-1954," database with images, FamilySearch https://familysearch.org
"1817 January 8th... Richard Spalding to Henny Thompson".   Richard was 39, Henny (Henrietta) was 31.  I have their children as:
  1. Caroline Ann (1817-1849) married Alewis J. McAtee
  2. William Thomas "Tunk" (1818-1881) married (1) Amanda Jarboe, (2) Louisa Abell
  3. Joseph (1822-1884) married Mary Jane Mattingly
  4. Henry Hudson (1823-1853) married Isabelle H. Mattingly
  5. Mary Jane (1825-1847) married John Barton Abell, she predeceased her father
  6. John Austin (1826-1913) married Ann Melvina Simms
John Austin Spalding was born May 27, 1826 and his mother died June 9th.  He is my husband's maternal Second Great Grandfather.  "Tunk" Spalding, with Louisa Abell, is my husband's paternal Second Great Grandfather.

"Kentucky, County Marriages, 1797-1954," database with images, FamilySearch https://familysearch.org
The marriage bond of Richard Spalding and Mrs. Mary Adams, 15th day of February, 1827.  He was 49, Mary was 34.  I have their children as:
  1. Susan Mary (1831-1902)
  2. George Robert (1833-?)
  3. Thomas S. (1834-1855)  married Ann Elizabeth Mudd
Richard was the father of anywhere from 16 to 22 children according to various online trees.  I have the names of 16.  The following is an excerpt from the book "Spalding Memorial, A Genealogical History of Edward Spalding, of Massachusetts Bay, and His Descendants", by Samuel Jones Spalding.  Richard's son Martin John, Bishop of Louisville at the time, wrote in a letter to E. W. Spalding, Esq., dated June 21, 1859:
"My grandfather, Benedict Spalding, came with his family to Kentucky, in the spring of 1791.  He had a large family of twelve children, all of whom, except three, are now dead, most of them leaving large families.  My own father, the oldest son of my grandfather, Richard Spalding, died in 1850, leaving fourteen living children, I being the third son, having been born May 23, 1810. "
From the same book, in a letter to Samuel J. Spalding from M. J. Spalding, then the Archbishop of Baltimore, dated Jan. 6, 1871:
"...my own father, Richard, had twenty-one children, of whom fifteen were raised to become men and women."
In the book "The Life of the Most Rev. M. J. Spalding, D. D.: Archbishop of Baltimore", written in 1873 by J. L. Spalding:
"Richard Spalding, the eldest son of Benedict, was the father of the Archbishop.  He was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland, and came to Kentucky with his father.  He was thrice married, and by these unions became the father of twenty-one children."
Both of Richard's first two wives may have died of complications from childbirth.  Assuming 21 is the correct number of Richard's children, the five I'm missing most likely died as infants.  I don't know if Mrs. Mary Adams had any children with her first husband, I haven't even found out his name.

Richard Augustine Spalding has many descendants.  If you are one of them, feel free to leave a comment.  Which one (or more) of his children is in your direct line?

Wedding Wednesday - Bland-Abell of Raywick, Kentucky

Bland-Abell

The marriage of Miss Mary Thelma Bland, of the Raywick section, and Louis Raymond Abell, of the eastern part of the county, was solemnized at St. Francis' church at Raywick Wednesday morning.  The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lafe Bland and has a host of warm friends in the community where she lives.  The groom, who is a highly regarded young farmer, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Abell.

At Rootsweb and Ancestry I found a marriage date for them of January 6, 1926.  There was no date on this clipping.

Wedding Wednesday - August Weddings in my Family Tree

Looking at marriages in August in my family tree, I have at least 51 couples who had an August wedding.  Five couples chose August 12th making it the most popular day of the month.  Only two couples among my direct ancestors were married in August.

William Simpson & Avarilla Perkins, my Sixth Great Grandparents, were married August 18, 1742 in Baltimore, Maryland.  Their marriage is listed in the book, Maryland Marriages 1634-1777, compiled by Robert Barnes, and can be found at Ancestry.

Roger Prescott & Helen or Ellen Shaw were married August 20, 1568 in England.  They are my Eleventh Great Grandparents.  This is so far back in history it's rare to have any actual documentation.  Their marriage is listed on Ancestry, but there is no image and the source information is "an array of materials including pedigree charts, family history articles, queries."

My husband's Grandparents
William Alfred Bryant Mattingly & Mary Frances Charlotte Boone were married August 28, 1900 at St. Augustine Church in Lebanon, Kentucky.  William was 50 years old at the time, he died only 9 years later.  This was his second marriage, his first wife was Mary Elizabeth Mattingly.  Lottie was widowed at age 31 with six children and never married again.

Wedding Wednesday - July Weddings in my Family Tree

In order to determine the couple in my family tree who was married the longest, I need to know two things:  1) when they were married and 2) when at least one of them died.  So just looking at my direct ancestors who meet that criteria, the couple married the longest is my paternal Great Grandparents, Clarence & Cora Mann.  Married in Fairbury, Nebraska on July 5, 1899, they were married for 69 years until his death in October, 1968.  I'm not sure, but it seems like I remember hearing that their anniversary was mentioned by Paul Harvey on his radio show.  The Lincoln Journal Star even published an article about their anniversary in July of 1968. In 1949, they got their picture in the paper for their 50th anniversary.  Such media moguls!

Less attention was probably given to my Seventh Great Grandparents Ebenezer Bliss & Joanna Lamb.  They were married in Springfield, Massachusetts on July 23, 1723 and until his death in November of 1761 - over 38 years.  They are also the Fourth Great Grandparents of Cora Mann.

On July 2, 1648, Thomas Sawyer married Mary Prescott in what is now Lancaster, Massachusetts.  Thomas died in 1706, so they were married for 58 years.  They are my Eighth Great Grandparents.  Their marriage is recorded in various books of transcribed Vital Records from Massachusetts towns.

Gabriel Mattingly & Ann Juliette Molohon were married on July 24, 1810 in Washington County, Kentucky.  This awesome, original but hard to read document is online at familysearch.  They are my husband's Second Great Grandparents.

The stats for July are 49 marriages, the 11th is the most popular date with four marriages on that day.  Probably not all of them got the media attention that Clarence & Cora Mann did.

Wedding Wednesday's - June Weddings in My Family Tree

Today, June 22nd, is my 25th wedding anniversary.  June's reputation as the "wedding month" holds true and IS the most popular month among all of the couples in my tree.  Sixty-five marriage dates in my tree are in June.  June 10th is the most popular day of the year, with six couples getting married on that date.  But besides me, only three sets of my direct ancestors chose to have June weddings.

My marriage license is not as pretty as some of the old ones that I've found.  It's a bland typed-up, fill-in-the-blank form.  No elaborate fonts, no calligraphy, no pretty flowers.  At least with a typed form, everything is more legible than this old hand-written one.

This is from the Marriage Register of the Whitestown Presbyterian Church in New York.  The bottom half of this says, "June 16 Mr       Lee to Miss Case, the former of Utica, the latter of Verona, $2.00".  The information is vague, but my cousin Linda also gave me a copy of the Family Bible which has the marriage recorded.  My copy is hard to read, but I have no reason to doubt that this is their marriage record.  Charles Lee & Susannah Case were married on June 16, 1845 in Whitestown, New York.  They celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary just two months before Susannah died of complications in childbirth.  They are my Third Great Grandparents.

Two sets of my Sixth Great Grandparents were married in June.  Both couples are the Third Great Grandparents of my Great Grandma Cora (Gaisford) Mann.  On June 7, 1755, Thomas Cogswell & Grace Martin were married in Hilperton, Wiltshire, England.  The next year on June 10, 1756, Stephen Bliss married Katherine Burt in Massachusetts.  They were married 49 or 50 years, depending on his exact date of death.

We don't have a big celebration planned.  I will just drink a toast tonight to all the couples who came before me.  Cheers!

Wedding Wednesday - May Weddings in my Family Tree

This may be the "wedding photo" of my Paternal Second Great Grandparents William Roscoe & Lena Jorgenson.  This photo was taken in Peotone, Illinois where they both lived before coming to Nebraska.  But their marriage certificate is from Gage County, Nebraska dated May 4, 1882.  Whether the photo was taken before or after their wedding, getting it had me doing a happy little genealogy dance.

In 1627 on the 28th of May in Drayton, Somerset, England William Roscoe's fifth Great Grandparents, John White & Joan West were married.   How cool would a "wedding portrait" be of this couple!  I'm their ninth Great Granddaughter.

On May 23, 1867, Charles Gaisford & Henrietta Smith were married in Worcester, Massachusetts.  They are my paternal Grandmother's Grandparents and were married for over 52 years at his death.  Ancestry has his name as "Gilford".

Three days in a row in Wayne County, Kentucky are anniversary dates of my direct maternal ancestors.  David Bell & Mary Polly Adair were married on May 4, 1812.  Twenty-six years minus one day later their son, John Silas Bell married Rutha Simpson on  May 3, 1838.  Those couples are my Fourth and Third Great Grandparents respectively.  Also in Wayne County, my Second Great Grandparents Benjamin Spann & Hiley Decker were married on May 5, 1852.

Three sets of my Second Great Grandparents were married in May - the Roscoe's, the Gaisford's & the Spann's.   May 4th and May 19th are the most popular dates for May weddings in my tree with 4 each out of 42 total.  William & Lena were married for 65 years, the second longest marriage of my direct ancestors that I am aware of in my family tree.

In my husband's maternal branch of the tree there are two couples who chose May wedding dates.  His Second Great Grandparents John Austin Spalding & Ann Melvina Simms were married on May 27, 1851 in Marion County, Kentucky.  I have that his Fourth Great Grandparents Benedict Thomas & Ann Abell were married on May 29, 1798.  They married in either Maryland or Kentucky, I haven't found a record to confirm that yet.

These marriages were more recent than the ones I had in my April list.  It's nice to be able to find actual copies and online images of the marriage certificates or licenses of these couples.  Photographs are still hard to come by, but any I can find will have me dancing like no one is watching -- and hoping no one is.

Wedding Wednesday - April Weddings in my Family Tree

Whether superstition had anything to do with it or not, no one in my family tree was married on April Fools Day.  April 5th and 15th were the most popular dates with 3 couples each out of a total of 40 couples in my tree that I have a marriage record for who chose a date in April.  This year I'm focusing on the marriage records for my direct ancestors - what I have, what I'm missing.  From my database I printed a report of all marriages by month.  I'm not as familiar with the names several generations back in my tree, I have to look them up to see which branch they are in.  Seeing them individually and out of the pedigree box they're usually in gives me a different perspective.

In my paternal Great Grandmother Lottie Roscoe's line there are three different couples who were married in April.  First my Third Great Grandparents David Roscoe & Mary Fero were married on  April 6, 1854.  David died soon after their 30th wedding anniversary.

Both sets of David Roscoe's maternal Great Grandparents (my Sixth Great's) were married in April.  On April 3, 1729 John Corbin & Martha Hosmer got married.  And on April 5, 1742 William Harlow & Hannah Littlejohn tied the knot.

Two couples among my maternal direct ancestors had April wedding dates.

John Vines & Elizabeth Smith were my Great Grandma Sadie Negley's Fifth Great Grandparents.  On April 25, 1723 at Westminster Parish in Anne Arundel County, Maryland they exchanged vows.

Edward Spann & Margaret Harvey were married on April 4, 1621.  With dates that far back, I'm always amazed when I find a record, but Family Search has it online.  There is no image of the original document, but the Cheshire, England Parish Records have been filmed and indexed by the LDS Church.  Edward & Margaret are Great Grandma Allie Spann's Seventh Great Grandparents.

These marriages all happened so long ago, I'd be foolish to think I could find a photo of each happy couple.  I can't always put a face to a name, so I think outside the pedigree box once in a while for a different look at my ancestors.

Wedding Wednesday - March Weddings in my Family Tree

March 19th this year will be my parents' 55th wedding anniversary.   In their wedding photo album is the cutest photo - the candle lighters are holding back the bride while the maid of honor is kissing the groom on the cheek.  Everyone is playing their part well.  The candle lighters look scared, the bride looks angry and the maid of honor and the groom look like they are enjoying themselves.

They are one of 42 couples I have in my family tree who were married in March, six in my direct line.  March 17th and March 30th are the two most common dates with 4 couples each choosing that date.

Mom's Grandparents Cicero Bell & Allie (Spann) Vickery were married on March 17, 1901 in Kentucky.  This was the second marriage for both of them.  Cicero's first marriage was to Mittie Ramsey in 1891 and that marriage was also on March 17th.

Mom's Great Grandparents, Josiah Negley & Sarah Lee, were married on March 5, 1871 in Buda, Illinois (March 5th was also her birthday).  They were married for 51 years.  Their original marriage certificate is framed and hangs in my house.

Dad has two sets of Second Great Grandparents who married in March.  First Heinrich Knapp & Caroline Schukky, were married in Germany on March 8, 1839.  Their marriage lasted until his death 53 years later.

Second James Gaisford & Anna Rich were married on March 28, 1838 in England.  At Anna's death in 1882, they had been married for over 44 years.

Dad's Seventh Great Grandparents Clement Corbin & Dorcas Buckminster of Woodstock, Connecticut were married on March 7, 1654.  Clement died during their 43rd year of marriage.

On March 31, 1657, James Bird & Lydia Steele were married in Farmington, Connecticut.  They were Dad's Eighth Great Grandparents.  Lydia died within two years, possibly from complications in childbirth.

It would be awesome to have a wedding photograph for any of these couples.  Even if it's just a plain-old pose like the bride & groom standing at the altar.

Wedding Wednesday - February Weddings in My Family Tree

Out of 40 couples in my family tree who were married in the month of February, only one couple chose Valentine's Day to get married.  February 21st and February 27th are the most popular days in February in my family, tied at 4 couples each marrying on those days.

On February 4, 1879, my maternal third Great Grandfather Hartwell "Jack" Spann married for a second (or third?) time at "age 66" (truth be told, he was older).  He married Susan A Culver, who at age 56 was marrying for the first time.  Their marriage record has been transcribed and is online at the Wayne County, Kentucky Genweb site.  Unfortunately, the record for his first marriage in about 1820 to my 4th Great Grandmother, Mary ?, is not online anywhere that I have found.  They were my Great Grandma Allie Spann's Grandparents.

Also on my maternal side I have found records online for two ancestors of my Great Grandma Sadie Negley.  My sixth Great Grandparents, Mordecai Hall and Sarah Vines married on February 21, 1744.  St Margaret's Westminster Parish in Anne Arundel County, Maryland was the site.  I don't know how many years they were married because I don't know when either of them passed away.

My seventh Great Grandparents, John Foster and Elizabeth Greene, were married February 15, 1703 at St Barnabus Church in Prince George's County, Maryland.  He died when he was only 32 years old, giving them only about 17 years together.

On my Dad's side of the family tree a couple of my Seventh Great Grandparents chose February wedding dates.  James Hosmer and Elizabeth Sawyer married on February 16, 1686 in Concord, Massachusetts.  They were married at least 20 years and had 9 children.

William Harlow and Mercy Rider were married on February 24, 1714 or 1715, together for at least 37 years.  The marriage took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts where Mercy's second Great Grandfather, Richard Warren arrived on the Mayflower.

Wilhemus Fero and Geertruy Van Vracken, my fifth Great Grandparents, were married on  February 27, 1791 at the Schenectady Reformed Church in Schenectady, New York.  I don't have their death dates.

My husband's Great Grandparents, Robert I Boone and Elizabeth Johnson, were married on February 3, 1874 in Nelson County, Kentucky.  They were married for 26 years. Their marriage certificate is online at familysearch, org.

Several of these marriages occurred during Colonial times.  I won't pretend to know a lot about weddings during that time, but I know they weren't quite as elaborate as they are today.   It would be interesting to know more details about the ceremony, the flowers, the clothes they wore and if and how they decorated.  And whether or not the bridesmaids wore red.

Wedding Wednesday - January Weddings in My Family Tree

January 1 is a popular wedding day in my family tree.  There are a total of 56 January marriages in my database and six of them are on January 1, the most of the whole month. "New year, new beginnings".  I don't know if you could get anyone to marry you on New Year's Day nowadays.  Maybe those chapels in Las Vegas are open for business.

Several of my direct ancestors were married in the month of January.  The majority of these are on my paternal side.  I  am working on getting the documentation for all of them yet.

My second Great Grandparents, Henry Menke and Eliza Knapp were married on January 13th in 1867. Both of Henry's daughters and one son from his first marriage were also married in the month of January.

A few ancestors of my Great Grandma Lottie Roscoe married in January.  My eighth Great Grandparents, John Ruscoe and Rebecca Beebe on January 2, 1650.  My ninth Great Grandparents, Jonathan Barnes and Elizabeth Hedge on January 4, 1665.  My ninth Great Grandfather William Harlow married his second wife, Mary Shelley, on January 20, 1665.  Mary Shelley is a step-Grandmother.  My tenth Great Grandparents Stephen Hosmer and Dorothy Selden were married on January 25, 1602.

Five different generations of my Bliss family line were married in January.  My third Great Grandparents, John Potter Smith and Mary Abigail Bliss were married on January 17, 1847.  Mary Bliss' parents, Austin Bliss and Abigail Bumstead were married on January 28, 1817.  Abigail Bumstead's grandparents, Joseph Bumstead and Jemimiah Bliss were married on January 23, 1774.  On that same day in 1744, Jemimiah Bliss' parents, my seventh Great Grandparents, Peletiah Bliss and Jemima Hitchcock were wed.  Finally, my ninth Great Grandparents, John Damon and Martha Howland, were married on January 15, 1659.

Only two couples on my maternal side chose January wedding dates.  My Fifth Great Grandparents in the McGrath line, Lebbeus Simmons and Mary Douglas, were married on January 27th, 1774.  Ancestors of my Great Grandmother Sadie Negley, my eighth Great Grandparents, William and Elizabeth Seaborn were married on January 28, 1702.

Mattingly ancestors that I have January wedding dates for in my tree are all on my husband's maternal side.  His grandparents, Mark Thomas Spalding and Cora Lulu Spalding were married on January 10, 1910.

Three sets of Mark Thomas Spalding's Great Grandparents were married in January.  Richard Spalding and Henrietta Thompson on January 20, 1817.  Aloysius Abell and Mary Fenwick on January 11, 1829.  Robert S Thomas and Matilda Spalding on January 24, 1832.  Parents of Matilda Spalding, Edward Spalding and Elizabeth Spalding were married on January 27, 1806.

The weather is very often a determining factor when choosing a wedding date for people today.  Most of these weddings mentioned here took place in northern states like Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maryland where it was surely cold in January.  Apparently that wasn't a factor.

now both of this County, according to the Usual Custom and Laws of the State of Illinois

Witness:  John H Perisol  Clerk of the County Court in and for the County of Fulton,

and the Seal of said Court hereunto affixed, at Lewiston, this 30th day of July, A. D. 1861
John H. Perisol, Clerk

State of Illinois, Fulton County

I hereby Certify that on the 31 day of July, A. D. 1861, I joined in the Holy State of Matrimony James Davee to Mary R. Simmons, according to the Custom and Laws of Illinois.
Given under my Hand and Seal, this 31 day of July, A. D. 1861.
Benjamin Davee, P. M.

While I can find quite a bit about James Davee online (he may have been married as many as 5 times), it is really the death date and burial location for Mary Rosilla Simmons that I most want to find.  She was my 2nd Great Grandmother Rachel's sister.  My narrative on Rachel is here.

Although I haven't confirmed this, according to census records and others' online trees James & Rosilla had 2 children, Eliza Jane born May 28, 1862 in Cumberland County, Illinos and William Grant born November 1864.  Then July 1, 1866 James married Mary Shepard in Jasper County.  So sometime between November 1864 and July 1866 and somewhere in Cumberland, Jasper or maybe Fulton county, Rosilla Davee died.  She would have been about 22 years old.

Rosilla's parents were Lebius and Ruth (Smith) Simmons.  Lebius died sometime between 1850 and 1854.  Ruth died sometime between 1862 and 1866, about the same time as Rosilla.  I'd love to find the causes of their deaths to know if it was some disease they both died from.  Is there an obscure source for death records in the 1860's central Illinois that someone can tell me about?

James is the son of Benjamin and Amanda (Shorde) Davee.  (Yes, I think this is the same Benjamin who married James and Rosilla.)  They are in Shelby County, Indiana in 1850.  Amanda died in 1856 and is buried in Aten Cemetery, Hidalgo, Jasper Co., Illinois.  Benjamin with new wife Nancy and family including James are in Greenup, Cumberland Co., Illinois in 1860.

In 1870 Crooked Creek, Jasper Co., Illinois I find James, with wife Louisa 19, his children (with Rosilla), Lizia J 8, and William 5.  Also in the household are Alwildia, 9/12, and Francis Elliot 73.  Benjamin Davee is still in Greenup with wife Nancy and 5 children.  Nancy was much younger than Benjamin, so assuming the children are theirs, the most interesting thing is that the youngest child, just a month old, is named Rosilla.  I think that says they thought well of Mary Rosilla Simmons Davee.
