Catherine Elizabeth Mattingly 1907-1936

Lottie, Catherine & Ham Mattingly
110 years ago on June 21, 1907 William Alfred Bryant Mattingly and his wife Lottie of Marion County, Kentucky had a daughter they named Catherine Elizabeth. She was my husband's Aunt, but she died before he was born. She had two older brothers, William Robert and Benedict Boone; two older sisters, Mary Etta and Eliza Celeste; and a baby brother Joseph Hamilton, who was two years younger. She also had two older half siblings, John Raymond and Josephine Mattingly. A half-sister, Gertrude, died before Catherine was born and her father died before she turned three. They all lived in Marion County, Kentucky.

"Young Woman Succumbs

Miss Catherine E. Mattingly, 29 years old, passed away at 4:00 o'clock Tuesday morning at the home of D. A. and W. B. Bickett on the National Cemetery Road near Calvary where she had made her home with her mother, Mrs. Lottie Mattingly, for sixteen years.  Her death was due to bonchial (sic) pneumonia which developed following a ten months illness of a complication of diseases.
Miss Mattingly was graduated from the Calvary High School in 1928, after which she took a nurses' training course at a hospital in St. Louis, Mo.  Later she went to Indianapolis, Ind., where she served at St. Francis' Hospital until forced by ill health to give up her work and return home.  She was a daughter of the late William A. Mattingly, and Mrs. Lottie Boone Mattingly, and was born in this county June 21, 1907.  She was a faithful member of Holy Mary's Catholic Church at Calvary and was a young woman possessing many traits which endeared her to a wide circle of friends.
Besides her mother, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Virgil Dennison of Indianapolis, Ind.; three brothers, Boone Mattingly of Louisville and Robert and Hamilton Mattingly of Lebanon, and one half-brother, Raymond Mattingly of Louisville.
Funeral services were held at 9:00 o'clock yesterday morning at Holy Mary's Church at Calvary by the Rev. Robert Canty, and burial was in Holy Mary's Cemetery.
The pallbearers were:  Garland Luckett, Paul Bland, Joseph Ford, George Spalding, Vincent Spalding and Kelly Thomas."

It is now known that what Catherine went to St Louis, Missouri for was to have a child. She lived at the "St. Ann's Widow's Home, Lying-In Hospital and Foundling Asylum". Catherine's son was born in November, 1928. He found his birth family in the 1990's, too late to meet his birth mother.

On October 13, 1936 Catherine passed away at only 29. Her official cause of death was "carcinoma of breast, with general metastosis".   She had fought breast cancer for 2 years.

Along with the death certificate, obituary and papers from St. Ann's Home, that my sister-in-law had in a file was this poem.  The author is unknown, she may have written this herself.

A Broken Hearted Girl

I am dreaming, dreaming dear,
Wondering here tonight
Thinking only dear, of you
In the moon-light

Some day you'll be sorry
And think of what I've said
Yes, you will think of me
When I'm dead

How my heart is sad and broken?
How I long and sigh and pine?
How the memories come stealing?
How I think of the flight of time?

It will be too late I fear
When you will think and do what's right
Now you'll remember this I've said
Here in the moonlight

She was reunited with her son when he passed away in 2014.

Spalding-Mattingly

The wedding of Miss Elizabeth Spalding and Hamilton Mattingly, both popular young people of the Calvary section, was solemnized Tuesday morning at 6:00 o'clock at Holy Mary's Church at Calvary, the pastor, Rev. J. P. Welsh, officiating in the presence of quite a number of relatives and friends.  A Nuptial High Mass followed the ceremony.
Miss Rebecca Spalding, sister of the bride, was the bridesmaid, and Vincent Spalding was the groom's best man.The bride was attractively attired in a brown crepe dress trimmed in velvet with hat and other accessories to harmonize.  She carried an arm bouquet of pink rosebuds and ferns.

The bridesmaid wore a green crepe dress with accessories to match and carried pink rosebuds and ferns.Following the ceremony, breakfast was served at the home of the bride's parents, after which Mr. and Mrs. Mattingly left for Mount St. Joseph's Academy, Daviess County, where they visited her sister, Sister Praxedes.  They will go to housekeeping in an apartment at the home of Miss Ethel Goodin on Chandler Street in this city.

Mrs. Mattingly is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Spalding and possesses many qualities of mind and heart that have endeared her to a wide circle of friends.  She attended school at Calvary and was graduated from St. Charles High School at St. Mary.  Later she attended Campbellsville College.  For two terms she was an efficient teacher in the county schools and at one time was a nurse at Boldrick's Infirmary in this city.

Mr. Mattingly is an energetic young man and is employed at the John A. Wathen Distillery Co.  Until a few months ago he was engaged in farming.  He is a son of Mrs. Lottie Mattingly and the late William Mattingly.

Newspaper Clippings - Lebanon, Kentucky, 1921

In an election year like this, I'm sure I'm not the only person who gets sick of hearing politicians talk.  It's hard for me to decide who to believe.  But it's important to remember that the right for me to decide and have my decision count at the polls was a battle that had to be fought by others before me.  The following article from May 6, 1921 was just less than 9 months after the ratification of the 19th Amendment on August 26th, which gave women - for the first time - the right to vote.   Did the additional number of voters create a need for precinct changes?

Included in this article on voting precinct changes in Marion County are many women, some are Mattingly relatives.  Mrs. "Lettie" (should be Lottie) Mattingly was 42 years old when she would have been allowed at the polls for the first time.  This Cora Spalding may either have been the wife of Mark (but why is it not "Mark and his wife" like the other husbands and wives listed) or it may have been his sister, Annie Cora Spalding.  Other sisters of Mark were Edith Spalding, Stella Spalding and Mrs. Susie Ford.  They were all in their 30's and 40's.  These women may have either helped get Warren G. Harding elected President, or were disappointed that James M. Cox did not.  But they were among the first women in the family who had the chance to vote.

Children's Home Society

The Enterprise has received the following from the Kentucky Children's Home Society:
From Marion county, 12 children have been received into the Receiving Home of the Kentucky Children's Home Society, Louisville, whereas the total appropriations from Marion county, by the Fiscal Court have been only $400 during the twenty-five years of the society's existence.
Toward the building fund the county has given $297.50 although its quota has been fixed at $3000.
The building fund is for the erection of the cottage village at Lyndon, Ky., where ground was broken March 1 and the plans are for the completion of the administration building and one large cottage in October.  The village is to be a memorial from the school children of Kentucky to the homeless children of the State thru the plan evolved by Robert L. Sehon, Superintendent of the society.  The appeal for nearly half of the building fund of $300,000 is being made to the school children thru the schools of Kentucky.

Pastor's Salary Increased.

The following is taken from the First Presbyterian Church Weekly Bulletin:
"A check for an increased amount accompanied by a letter from the Church Treasurer informs the pastor that the Deacons had met in his absence and on account of the generosity of the congregation had been able to vote an increase in his salary of five hundred dollars.  The pastor wishes to express to our membership and friends sincere thanks for this helpful advance.  The Lord has blessed our congregation in many ways during the past year.  Let us always seek His favor."

Surname Saturday - Mattingly

The Mattingly family originated in England and came to the Colonies in the mid 1600's. They originally settled in St Mary's County, Maryland and in the late 1700's several members of the family moved to the Washington, Nelson and Marion Counties area in Kentucky.  This is a summary of my husband's direct ancestral line as I have it, starting with his Great Grandfather.  I have some documentation, but I haven't verified this line.

James Raymond Mattingly, or "Raymond" as he is listed in census records, was born in Nelson County, Kentucky in 1814.  About 1840 he was married to Julia Mattingly.   1850 through 1870 they were in Washington County.  He died sometime after 1870, but his exact death date and burial location are unknown.

As I have it, Raymond was the son of Barnett Mattingly and Priscilla Cash.  Julia was the daughter of Gabriel and Ann Juliet Molohan.  Barnett and Gabriel were possibly brothers. There are many researchers who have the parents and children switched, or disagree that Barnett and Gabriel were brothers.

Barnett and Gabriel Mattingly were the sons of John Baptist Mattingly and Ann Fenwick.  Gabriel was born in Maryland in 1777 and Barnett was born there in 1785.  I don't have a death date or burial location for either one of them, but Gabriel moved to Washington, Daviess County, Indiana by 1850.

John Baptist Mattingly, born in 1736 at Mount Misery, St Mary's County, Maryland, the son of Thomas Mattingly III and Ruth Cole.  In about 1760, he married Ann Fenwick Spalding, widow of Clement.  John Baptist was deceased by May 12, 1817 at about 81 years old.

Thomas Mattingly III was born to Thomas Mattingly II and Mary Suttle about 1690 in St Mary's County, Maryland.  His first marriage was to Elizabeth Warren.  In 1715 he married Ruth Cole.  He died in April of 1774 at about 84 years old.

Thomas Mattingly II was born about 1650 in England.  He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (last name unknown).   He was married by October 7, 1680 to Mary Suttle in St Mary's County, Maryland.  Then about 1685 he married Elizabeth (last name unknown).  He died at age 64 in 1714 in St Mary's County.  His will is found in the book "Maryland Calendar of Wills:  Wills from 1713 to 1720" Vol. 2, by Jane Baldwin Cotton, Roberta Bowling Henry.

Thomas Mattingly was born about 1630 in England and died July 24, 1664 in St Mary's County, Maryland at 34 years old.  He married Elizabeth (last name unknown) about 1650.
