Tombstone Tuesday - Spalding Graves at Calvary, Kentucky

Old Grave yard at Calvary
These old graves are in the Old Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church cemetery in Calvary,
Kentucky.  This photo was taken by my sister-in-law, I believe about 1974.  The first burial in this old cemetery dates back to 1794.  I have a listing with about 250 people buried there that someone created by reading the tombstones, but the date that listing was created is not stated.  So many of these stones are no longer standing.  The photo below is one I took in 2014, showing what they have done with old broken stone remnants.

Entrance to Old graveyard at Calvary

In about the middle of the cemetery, the are a few stones that stand out behind this old wrought-iron fence.  The graves of Richard Augustine Spalding and two of his wives are there.  Richard's grave is in the background of this photo behind the one leaning on the fence.  This was also taken by my sister-in-law in the 70's.

The stone leaning on the fence is for Mary (Charlton-Adams) Spalding, third wife of Richard.  She died at age 57, just 33 days before Richard.  The stone reads:  "Here lies the remains of Mary Spalding, consort of Richard Spalding, born Octo. 11, 1792, died Aug. 4, 1850, in the 58th year of her age after a long illness patiently endured.  A devoted wife, mother and Christian.  May she rest in peace."

The stone lying down is inscribed:  "Thomas S. Spalding, born Sept. 23, 1834, died Oct. 5, 1855, aged 21 Yrs & 11 D's.  Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord R. I. P."  I believe he is Richard and Mary's son.

I took this photo of Richard's grave in 2008.  It's very hard to read most of the inscription, but my best attempt is:  "Here Lie, the mortal remains of, Richard Spalding, born April 16, 1777, died Sept. 7, 1850, a devoted father and husband, a true friend of the poor, he died strong in faith and in hope and surrounded by all the [?] and consolations of [?] ".  There is more that's impossible to read.*  Richard was 73.

This is from my most recent trip to the cemetery in May of 2014, the fence is nearly all down and somehow the tree has disappeared.  Mary's stone is in the center, the small one to the right is for "William Charlton, died July 22, 1852".  Mary's maiden name was Charlton, his birth year listed at Find A Grave would be about right for him to be her brother.

Richard was married three times, first to Henrietta Hamilton in 1801.  She is also buried in this fenced in area, but I don't have a photo of her grave.  This Henrietta died in 1815 at age 35.  Then in 1817 Richard married Henrietta Thompson, who is my husband's Third Great Grandmother.  She died at age 40 in 1826 and was buried in the St. Augustine Church Cemetery in Lebanon.  In 1827, Richard married Mrs. Mary Adams, whose grave is pictured above.

It's amazing to find these 166 year old stones at all, and these are still standing in pretty good shape considering the years.  Maybe that wrought-iron fence kept them from becoming part of the entrance collage.

* [Edited 10/18/16] After publishing this post, I remembered that I in the summer of 1992, along with family members and my new Canon Camcorder, I was at this cemetery.  From that video in which those who were with me read what they could of the inscription on Richard's marker, I now have what I believe is the complete inscription:

"Here Lie, the mortal remains of, Richard Spalding, born April 16, 1777, died Sept. 7, 1850, a devoted father and husband, a true friend of the poor, he died strong in faith and in hope and surrounded by all the aid and consolations of the living.  Blessed are the dead who died in the Lord, for their deeds follow them.".

Tombstone Tuesday - Samuel Gaisford & Wives

Samuel Gaisford, brother of my second Great Grandfather Charles Gaisford, died December 3, 1921.  He was 64 years old and was laid to rest in the Prairie Home Cemetery north of Diller, Nebraska.  Born January 21, 1857 in Pascoag, Rhode Island, Samuel was a son of James and Anna (Rich) Gaisford.  The Gaisford family moved from Rhode Island to Minonk, Illinois when Sam was 12.  In 1870, at age 14, he was a farm hand for his brother-in-law, George Pickard in Woodford County.

Ellen S. Wife of S. Gaisford, died Sept. 2, 1887, Aged 28 Years, Rest in peace

Samuel's first wife was Ellen S. Pickard.  They were married February 5, 1880 in Minonk, Illinois then moved to Nebraska in 1881 where he was a blacksmith.  From Sam's obituary in the Diller Record, December 9, 1921:  "On September 2nd, 1887, he was bereaft of his wife.  After her death he returned to Minonk, Illinois, and engaged in the barber business for a number of years.".

Back in Gage County, Nebraska on October 5, 1885, Sam married Emma Emmerman (or Ammerman).  They had 3 children, Mabel, Lyle and Charley.  In 1900, Sam, Emma and son Lyle were living in Benton County, Arkansas.

By 1910 Lyle was deceased, Sam is living back in Nebraska with his sister Hannah and his son Charley Gaisford, 2 years old, is then living with Emma Thompson who was a daughter of Sam's brother Charles.  Emma Gaisford.  I found Emma Gaisford in Little Rock, Arkansas in the State Hospital for Nervous Disorders.

Sam's second wife Emma died in 1916 at age 46, her son Charley was 9 years old.  She is also buried in the Prairie Home Cemetery.  In 1920, Charley was living with his mother's relatives.  Mabel is mentioned in her father's obituary, but is not listed on any census record.  I would guess that Mabel and Lyle are buried somewhere in Arkansas.

Tombstone Tuesday - Negley Family Plot

The family plot of Josiah & Sarah Negley in the Harvard Cemetery, Harvard, Nebraska. The "community" of Eldorado doesn't have a cemetery.  Harvard is about 8 miles southwest of Eldorado.  Josiah, Sarah, Alice, Cal and Newton are there from right to left.  Newton died at age 13 of lockjaw after stepping on or stabbing his foot with a pitchfork.
To the left of Newton is Mary Negley, daughter of George and Lena Negley, granddaughter of Josiah & Sarah.  She died at 18 months old in 1908.

Tombstone Tuesday - Gaisford

Oh, how I wish it would warm up!  The Prairie Home Cemetery near Diller, Nebraska is 130 miles from me and I need to get back there and take some better photos.  As a kid going to my Grandparents farm, passing this cemetery was always the point of excitement on the long trip.  My Grandparents lived only one more mile down the road from there. Grandpa mowed the cemetery for several years.  He's buried there now.  So are Charles & Henrietta Gaisford and many of their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and more.

Tombstone Tuesday - CCR

Cleveland Crosby Roscoe was born April 30, 1885 in Saline County, Nebraska.  He was the oldest son of William and Lena Roscoe.

From what I've been told about Cleve, his wife was Josephine and they didn't have any children.  I'm finding some other things that are interesting - in the 1930 census record Cleve's age at his first marriage was 22, but in 1920 he was single (he was 35).  At familysearch.org I found a marriage record for a "C C Roscoe", son of William, married to Anna Cardst or Cordot on November 23, 1909 in Council Bluffs, Iowa (he was 24).  I haven't been able to find him in the 1910 census.  But I have found a marriage record in Jackson County, Missouri for Cleve Roscoe and Josephine Cox on June 3, 1921.

During WWI he served in France.  In 1920 he was stationed at Camp Stanley in Bexar, Texas.  He worked for the Kansas City Police Department and was a special agent for the Wabash Railroad.  He lived in Kansas City for about 20 years, then moved back to Nebraska.

Cleve was involved in a traffic accident on June 16, 1961 at the intersection of Highways 77 and 33 south of Lincoln.  On June 28 he died from his injuries.  He was preceded in death by his wife and 5 brothers, survived by 2 sisters and "a number of nieces and nephews".   He was 76 years old and is buried in the Lincoln Memorial Park in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Tombstone Tuesday - Roscoe Family Plots

The Roscoe family plot in the Clatonia Cemetery, Clatonia, Nebraska is the final resting place for my Great-Great Grandparents William and Lena Roscoe and 4 of their 8 children. The two military markers seen in this photo are for sons Frank and Oliver Roscoe.

Frank died in 1923 at age 34 of Typhoid fever.  He had served in France as a fireman in the Navy during WWI.  One obituary says he was survived by a wife but I have yet to learn her name, and there was no mention of any children.  Frank was single and living with his parents in 1920.  After recently stumbling on a short paragraph in the Beatrice Daily Sun, I suspect his wife may have been pregnant at the time of his death.  A "Miss Frankie Mae Roscoe of Missouri is visiting at the home of her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William Roscoe" in August of 1941. As of yet, this is the only reference to Miss Frankie Mae Roscoe I have ever seen and have not had any luck finding her in census records.

Oliver served as a private in the Army, Co 1,3 164 Depot Brig.  The Nebraska State Journal ran this paragraph on January 4, 1919:  "Oliver Roscoe, son of William Roscoe of Clatonia, died at the home of his parents on January 1.  The young man had been home only a day after being mustered out of the army.  He left Vancouver, Wash, sick with the Spanish influenza, to go to Camp Funston for discharge.  He contracted pneumonia before he reached home.  Oliver was well known and a popular young man among his friends."  He was 23 years old.  Oliver has a second flat marker for some reason.

William and Lena have this simple flat marker. Their son David Harlow Roscoe is also buried in Clatonia, but when I was there years ago I wasn't aware of that.  So I have no photo of a stone for him, but I know I would have taken one if I had seen it.  One of these days I'll get back there, it's about a 2 hour drive.  David lived with his parents until his death in 1948 at age 51. He apparently didn't ever learn to read or write, so I think he may have been mentally or physically challenged.

As I sort through my Roscoe files during the next few weeks, my series of blog posts will be focused on William and Lena's family.

Tombstone Tuesday - Bells in Kentucky

""Rutha Bell" is etched in this stone, I could make out some of her name and "April" and "April 1907".  Rutha is Martha's mother, born April 22, 1822 and died April 11, 1907.  In 1996 I didn't know findagrave.com existed (it only had for a year).  I was a novice at taking gravestone photos.  My old Canon Sure Shot camera took great pictures or so I thought until digital came along.  This is good, but if I had had digital then, maybe the lettering would show up a little more.  My video camera was still a new toy and I took video here, too.

This old stone was so hard to read, I apparently didn't take a snapshot of it.  But I did get it on video and I say how I can almost make out "John S Bell".  This is a screen shot from my computer I took from the paused DVD that had been transferred from the video, the extent of my photo skills (can blurry be photoshopped?).  This stone was to the left of Rutha's in the Stringer Cemetery on Cooper Ridge Road.  This cemetery looked like it was in someone's back yard and had not been mowed all year.  Also buried in this cemetery were Martha's sisters, Elizabeth, Emily and Ursula.

The sun was behind this one, makes for terrible lighting.  Polly's is one of the graves that I believe did get moved before the Wolf Creek Dam was built.  Her second husband, Garner Parmley, is buried beside her there and has a stone just like this one. They obviously are not that old.  This was in the New Bethel Cemetery behind the Parnell Methodist Church on Beaver Lodge Road.

Tombstone Tuesday - Mann Family Plot

These need to be fixed.  They are the gravestones of my Great Great Grandparents William and Nancy Mann and their son Lafayette.  At least they fell name-side-up.  I wonder what might be on the other side.  They are all in the Kilpatrick Cemetery, also known as the Friendship Cemetery, just south of Plymouth, Nebraska.  I took this photo in 2005.  The first step is to get an estimate.

UPDATE: June 4, 2018 - I'm late in updating this, but these grave stones have been uprighted!  I told my Dad, who told his cousins, some of whom happen to have a concrete construction business and in early 2017 they were fixed. Now the graves are being taken care of by family.
