William Mann's Parents

There are so many men named William Mann who came from England, it's a difficult name to research. Without any mention of his birthplace or parents' names in any records I had found, I was lost on my Second Great Grandfather's ancestry. Until someone posted the record of his second marriage on the Family Search website.

This page of a marriage register from Peoria county, Illinois for the year 1896 shows "William Mann" of "Harbine, Jefferson Co. Neb", a "farmer" age "66" who was born in "Forncett, Norfolk" is the son of "Robert Mann and Elizabeth Groomes". This is definitely the marriage of "my" William to Mary Armstrong, his second and her first marriage. I've edited the image above to show it all on this page.

So, it's exciting to learn his parents' name and birthplace, but...

Also posted is this record of a baptism for "William, bastard son of Elizabeth Mann." The Baptism occurred on February 22, 1829 in Forncett, St Peter, his mother listed as a spinster. William Mann's birth date is consistently listed as February 12, 1830 in every other record I have, but for various reasons dates can be incorrect.

The heading on this record reads:
Baptisms in the Parish of Forncett, St Peter in the County of Norfolk in the Year 1829
The last line reads:
Col 1 When Baptized:  1829 February 22nd No. 228
Col 2 Child's Christian Name:  William Bastard son of
Col 3 Parents Name, Christian:  Elizabeth
Col 4 Parents Name, Surname:  Mann
Col 5 Abode:  Forncett St Peter
Col 6 Quality, Trade, or Profession:  Spinster
Col 7 By Whom the Ceremony was performed: (not sure)

Forncett is about 110 miles northeast of London, and 10 miles southwest of Norwich. St Peter's is a church parish located there. Click on the link for more information and a photo of this historic church on Wikipedia.

So, did Robert Mann exist? Should I look for a Robert Groomes? Another record posted on Family Search for Elizabeth Mann shows her burial in the year 1847 at the age of 60. This would mean in 1829, she was about 42 years old. She lived in a Union Workhouse in Forncett, I need to find out more about that place. More research on these names might turn up some other records. Could this be why little information can be found about William Mann's heritage?

Whatever the case, William Mann traveled to America on his own, married a widow with a young daughter, raised her and seven children of his own, was married to his first wife for 33 years, became a successful farmer and left a legacy to be honored.

Imagining Christmas 1890

I can only imagine what my ancestors' Christmas was like in 1890. Most of my Great Grandparents were still children living with their parents, all but two of them in Nebraska. Before the end of their lifetimes, a few of them would be a part of my Christmas celebrations.

Christmas in 1890 was on Thursday. Historic newspapers indicate that while in Nebraska the weather was nice that year, a heavy snow storm was causing a lot of problems nearly everywhere from Chicago to the East Coast. The price of a postage stamp to mail a Christmas card was .02 cents. Believe it or not, that is right in line with today's price of .58 cents. I can't say for sure whether any of my ancestors traveled, or sent Christmas cards or baked cookies, or decorated their homes. But from what I do know, I can come up with some brief scenarios of what their Christmas might have been like in 1890.

Albert Menke, youngest son of Henry & Eliza Menke, was 4 years old living in Clatonia with his siblings Matilde, Katharina, Eliza, Rosa, George and Nettie. Living nearby, his oldest sister Caroline was married with a baby boy. Henry & Eliza were both born in Germany and likely there were some German Christmas traditions carried out in their home. Albert's maternal Grandparents Henry & Caroline Knapp lived in Portsmouth, Ohio along with other extended family he may not have known. He had cousins he could play with in Tobias, where his mothers sister Mary Boggs lived with her family. Another sister of Eliza, Hannah Smith, was out in western Nebraska.

Down the road in DeWitt, Lottie Roscoe was just 3 years old living with her parents, William and Lena, and her siblings Laura, Cleve and baby brother Frank. Her paternal Grandmother, Mary Roscoe, may have also lived with them. Lena's parents, Ole & Caroline Jorgenson, natives of Denmark, were living in Peotone, Illinois. The Roscoe family had been in America for several generations. Lottie had a few cousins close by to play with, but both her parents siblings were spread around the midwest. They may have gotten cards from relatives in Iowa, Illinois and Colorado.

Twelve year old Clarence Mann was living in Jefferson County with parents William and Nancy and siblings William, Horace, Oscar and Effie. Two older sisters were married with children near his age. His Grandparents were all deceased as far as I know. His mother had two brothers and some half-siblings living in Iowa. His cousins there were all older and I doubt he saw them very often. English, Irish and Scottish Christmas traditions may have influenced the celebrations in his family.

Cora & Clarence Mann, Christmas, 1962
Cora Gaisford was 8 years old, living with her parents Charles and Henrietta in Jefferson County. Also in the household were her siblings Charles, Maime, Anna, Emma, Carrie, Nellie, William, Gertrude and baby sister Gladys. Cora's maternal Grandfather, John Potter Smith, lived in Massachusetts, I'm not sure if she ever met him or any of her mothers siblings. Her Grandfather James Gaisford was living in central Illinois. Cora had Aunts, Uncles and Cousins living in Illinois, Iowa and also nearby in Gage and Jefferson counties.
Had they all been able to get together, it would have been a large crowd. Something Cora knew well when in her later years. I was among the crowd of some big celebrations with Clarence & Cora Mann's family.

In 1890 Art McGrath was 14, living in Dawson County with his parents John and Rachel McGrath. He never knew either set of his Grandparents. His two sisters, Becky and Minnie, were older and married with children all younger than him, but not by much. His nieces and nephews included Lizzie, Andrew, and Clara Smith, of Stockham in Clay County and Rebecca, Lenora, John Robert, Hayden, Marguerita and Daniel Patterson of Cozad in Dawson County. Art's mother's sister, Ruth Pettit and husband William were living with their eight children not far away near Callaway, Custer County, Nebraska. Great Grandpa McGrath and I may have celebrated a few Christmases together, but I have no memory of him.

Sadie Negley, 10-year-old daughter of Josiah and Sarah, was living in Eldorado with her 4 siblings, George, Alice, Will and Cal. Sadie's maternal Grandparents were both deceased, but her Uncle George W Lee, his wife Christine and 3 older cousins lived within traveling distance in Clay County at that time. Sadie's paternal Grandfather was also deceased, but Grandmother Ruth Negley was living in Decatur, Iowa. Several Aunts and Uncles and cousins lived in Iowa. I couldn't say if they did or not, but it wouldn't have been impossible for Josiah to take his family over the Missouri River and through southern Iowa to Grandmothers house for a visit.

Cicero Bell was at home in Wayne County, Kentucky, age 21. His Grandmother Rutha Bell was the matriarch of the family, his Grandfather John Silas was deceased. If Rutha had her entire family for Christmas dinner, there could have been Cicero, his mother Martha and his 2 younger siblings John and Laura; Rutha's son Ira Garner & wife Martha with 2 sons; Rutha's daughter Elizabeth Stringer, her husband John and 3 children; and possibly daughter Emily (I don't know her death date). Rutha's son Leish and wife Rebecca may have been in Texas by that time. Daughter Ursula had died in August leaving a husband and 3 children.

At 19, Allie Spann was living with her father Ben and step-mother Mattie in Wayne County, Kentucky. Her mother had died six years earlier. She had two siblings at home, Etta and Marrion, and two young step-brothers. Allie's other siblings were married with at least 15 children among them, most of them living in Kentucky. Her Grandparents were all deceased, but her extended family included Aunts, Uncles and cousins living in the area, too. She was likely acquainted with them, if not a part of their holiday celebrations.

Wishing everyone young and old, near and far, a very Merry Christmas!

William & Nancy & Mary

Copy of Bible Record, property of Doris Menke, date created unknown.

Written in a Bible record, printed in an obituary and etched on his tombstone, the date of February 12, 1830 is recorded as the birth of William Mann. He was born somewhere in England, but I have not found any bread crumbs to the exact location. If he had any siblings, he seems to have not had any contact with them. His parents remain a mystery. He told the 1900 census taker that 1852 was the year he immigrated, but I don't find a William Mann in any ships passenger lists for 1852.

The first definite record I've found of my Second Great Grandfather William Mann in America is an 1865 listing of voters in Princeville Election District in Peoria county, Illinois. An 1873 map with a list of settlers in Princeville precinct, Peoria County, Illinois indicates that William Mann had settled there in 1854.

In 1860, only one William Mann is listed in census for Peoria county. He is 48 years old living with a Smith family and no one else named Mann. His age would be too old for William and too young to be his father. Our William should be 30 years old, but he might be the man listed in Van Buren county, Iowa living with the Thomas Rain family. That man's age is given as 23 which is too young. But it's interesting because this William worked as a miner and Van Buren county happens to be the same place that Nancy (Climie) O'Brien, a widow with a one-year-old daughter, lived. Her husband had been a miner and was killed in an accident before June 1st, the date of the census. The daughter, Nancy Jane, was born July 23, 1859. William and Nancy were married on September 14, 1861, but I haven't found the location. They spent some time in Macon county, Missouri before William took her back to Princeville, Illinois by 1865. Did William go to Iowa to work in the mines to earn money, try out Macon, Missouri, then go back to Illinois to farm?

When a cousin gave me this photo of William Man and wife several years ago, she said she didn't know which wife was with him. After finding a photo posted online (below) of Nancy's half-sister Jane, I see a strong family resemblance between the two women.

Sisters Jane Jones Vandermark and Nancy Climie Mann, date unknown

Nancy was born in Canada to Thomas Climie/Clemie who was originally from Scotland and Mary Jane Hull an immigrant from Ireland. She had two older brothers, Andrew and Robert. Some people believe Thomas Climie died shortly after Nancy was born, others believe he left his family and married another woman. At any rate, her mother Mary Jane got remarried to Edward Jones and later moved to Van Buren county, Iowa. Together Mary Jane and Ed had four girls and one boy. Mary Jane died when the boy was born in 1854. At age 16, Nancy was likely the caretaker for those children. Two years later her step-father remarried and had two more children. Nancy married John O'Brien in 1858, had her daughter Nancy Jane, and then was a widow within two years.

Eleven children were born to William and Nancy in Princeville, four died as infants. The only record of them comes from the Bible record. No marked graves for these infant children have been found or recorded.

From the Bible record, the children of William and Nancy:

  1.     Ada, born July 10, 1862
  2.     Corean, born February 16, 1864, died at birth
  3.     Lafayette, born January 13, 1866
  4.     William B, born October 25, 1867
  5.     Stephen A, born August 25, 1869, died in infancy
  6.     Horace M, born July 28, 1870
  7.     Marvin Oscar, born November 15, 1872
  8.     Carrey, born January 11, 1875, died in infancy
  9.     Effa, born March 8, 1876
  10.     Clarence L, born June 18, 1878
  11.     Elsie, born August, 1880, died at birth

Between 1880 and 1881, William and Nancy moved their family to Jefferson county, Nebraska. In December of 1881, they lost their oldest son Lafayette. I haven't found the cause of his death at age 15. Nancy died on February 11, 1894, just a day before William's 64th birthday.

By 1885, William owned 880 acres of land in Jefferson Precinct, Jefferson County, Nebraska. His farm was worth $4650 according to the agricultural census taken that year. He grew corn, oats, wheat & a little rye and livestock included cattle, hogs, chicken and horses.

Mary Armstrong was the daughter of another early Princeville, Illinois setter James Armstrong and his wife Margaret. Mary was a pioneer school teacher in Brimfield and Princeville townships. She was a faithful worker in the church, taught Sunday School and was a member of the Womens Christian Temperance Union. She and her sister Margaret were known all over the northern part of Peoria county where they raised flax and prepared it for cloth themselves. Starting this endeavor during the Civil War, they carded and spun wool and wove it into blankets and rugs for many years.

It would be interesting to know if William Mann went back to Princeville with the intention of marrying Mary Armstrong, or if Mary had come to Nebraska and they got reaquainted. It's very likely they had known each other during the 1860's when William lived in Peoria County. She and William Mann were both 66 years old when they married in 1896, but I don't know where. It was Mary's first marriage. They lived at 715 Grace Street in Beatrice, William died there on August 29, 1905. Mary died January 17, 1912 and was buried in Coin, Iowa near a niece.

Equally Divided to all My Lawful Heirs

William Mann wrote out his last will and testament on May 1st, 1903. Just over two years later he passed away from heart failure on August 29, 1905 at age 75. Surviving him were his second wife Mary and seven adult children.

The lots mentioned in his will in Milliken's Subdivision, Beatrice, Nebraska were located between Scott and Linn streets to the North and South, and Sumner and Bluff streets East and West. $500 in 1905 is the equivalent of over $14,500 today. When the estate was settled two years later his children received an additional $175 each, which would compare to nearly $5000 today1. His step-daughter Nancy may have felt things were not exactly "equally divided", but there were no legal objections.  A transcription of the will follows the images.

"William Mann of Beatrice Gage County and State of Nebraska, being of sound mind and memory, do make, Publish, and declare this to be my last Will and testament, here by revoking all former Wills by me at any time heretofore made, and as to my worldly Estate and all the Property, Real Personal, or mixed, of, I shall die seized and Posessed or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease, I devise, bequeath and dispose thereof in the manner following, to wit -

Christmas Dinners in the News

A little history of Mann family Christmas dinners as played out through the Beatrice Daily Sun...

Mr and Mrs Oscar Mann of near Goodland, Kas., drove to Ellis the last of the week and visited Mr Clarence Mann and family and Will Camp and family and then drove on to Iowa to spend the holidays with relatives Miss Helen Camp, daughter of Mr and Mrs Will Camp who has been attending school in Kansas, accompanied them and will spend the holidays with her parents here. (December 27, 1929)

My Grandma and her twin brother, children of Clarence, would have been 9 years old. There were likely several cousins around their age that would have come with their Uncle Oscar. They must have had fun with them. Their cousin Helen Camp was twice their age.

Dinner Party
The following families enjoyed Christmas dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Mann in Beatrice: Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bartlett and son, Arvid, Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Bartlett and children, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carpenter, Mr. and Mrs. Pearle Nickeson and Donald and Betty and Mrs. Eva Mathias. (January 3, 1944)
During WWII, the Mann family was celebrating together with a few of the men off to war. A Grandson-in-law had lost his life in service about six months before this Christmas.

Holiday Mann Reunion
A holiday reunion of the family of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Mann was held at their home at 113 South Sumner St., Sunday, Dec. 28.
All of the sons and daughters were present and most of the grandchildren. A dinner was served followed by an exchange of gifts. (January 9, 1953)

This article goes on to mention everyone present, a total of 67 people. The home at 113 South Sumner Street was a two bedroom home with an unfinished basement.

Twelve of the thirteen living children of Mrs Clarence Mann, Beatrice and their children enjoyed their annual holiday dinner with her in her home at post-Christmas dinner Sunday. (January 15, 1969)

This was the first Christmas after Clarence had died. Probably, besides this dinner of the siblings, there was also a grand gathering of the 100 plus descendants of Clarence and Cora Mann. I'm not sure what year the final Christmas gathering of all the descendants of Clarence and Cora Mann was, but this only mentions children and grandchildren. Cora died in July of 1971.

C L Mann Selling Out

In 1940 my Great Grandpa Clarence Mann sold off his farm equipment. As of April 1st in the census of 1940, he was 61 years old, renting a home at 640 West Bismark in Beatrice for $12 a month with 4 people in the household. He noted he was seeking work and had been unemployed for three weeks (that would be about March 4th). He reported income of $200 in all of 1939.

This sale bill would likely have been posted in the Post Office, banks and many other businesses in the area. There isn't much here, probably the last of the farming equipment he ever owned. He had been a full-time farmer for many years. In the next few years, he went to work at Dempster Mills in Beatrice.

Mann Family Tombstones Set Upright

When I first found William and Nancy Mann's grave, it was disappointing to find their tombstones lying on the ground. But it was fortunate that they were lying with the inscriptions facing up. This was in 2003, and word spread through the family and a couple of years ago the stones were set back upright. Even their son Lafayette's stone on the left was reset.

Kilpatrick Cemetery is just a small country cemetery, pretty much abandonded. There is a pile of broken tombstones in one corner. After my family reset the Mann stones, I've heard it has been taken care of a little better. It's on the corner of 722 and 581 roads in rural Jefferson county. I've been back a few times and always forget exactly where it is. It's about 20 miles north of the Prairie Home cemetery where their son and my Great Grandpa Clarence Mann lies.

Four young children of William and Nancy died in Illinois before they moved away, then Lafayette died at age 17 not long after moving to Nebraska. There were 12 children in all. The other seven children's final resting places are in Iowa, California, Kansas and Nebraska.

As far as I know, William's parents remained in England and would be buried there. I have no idea yet who they are, but someone has named them on the Family Search tree. They have not responded to my request for more information about that.

Nancy's mother's grave is in Bonaparte, Iowa. I was able to visit that a few years ago.
