Centenarian Eliza Menke

Eliza (Knapp) Menke

A few months ago, I notice this photo of Eliza Menke posted on Family Search by Laura Quimby. It was possibly taken at her 100th birthday party, but I can't say that for sure. I want to share this great picture with my Menke relatives. Below is an article I wrote for the Nebraska State Genealogical Society's quarterly publication, "Nebraska Ancestree" (Vol 44-1, 2021)

A Century of Eliza

Born near Wurttemburg, Germany in 1841, she left with her family before the revolution of 1848. She died in Nebraska in 1944 while members of her family were fighting a war against her home country. In between, she "led a life of feverish activity."1

Heinrich & Caroline (Schukky or Schocke) Knapp welcomed Elizabeth, their first baby girl on May 15, 1841. Their two sons, Frederick and Lewis were still toddlers, and another son, Heinrich Ernst, was born a few years later. Because of the economic hardship and political unrest in Germany, Heinrich & Caroline made the decision to take their family to America. Eliza was just 4 years old when she spent eleven weeks sailing at sea in 1845. They passed port inspections in New York City, and traveled on to Scioto County, Ohio, where father "Henry" got work in the mines. Four more children were born in Ohio between 1848 and 1857 - Mary, Hannah, August and George.

On January 13, 1867 in Scioto County, Eliza became the wife of 34 year-old widower Henry Menke, as well as mother to his four children. At that time, Mary Ellen "Emma" was 9, John Frederich was 6, Henry Jr 3 and "Lizzie" was 1. Their own children started filling their home in 1868 with a daughter Ann Caroline. In 1869 a son, John, was born and died. A string of daughters started in 1870 with Mary, in 1872 Mathilde, 1874 Katharine, 1877 Eliza and in January of 1879, Rosa.

In 1878, Henry took a tour of western states and made the decision to move his family to Nebraska in the spring of 1879. Eliza's parents may have seen her for the last time that spring. Traveling by boat down the Ohio river to Cincinnati, then they boarded a train bound for Atchison, Kansas. From there likely by wagon, they headed northwest to Gage County. The family, minus the oldest daugher Emma who stayed with relatives in Ohio, settled on a farm two miles south and one mile west of Clatonia, in Section 33.

A son, George Edward, was the first to be born in Nebraska in 1881, followed by daughter Nettie in 1883, son Lewis who was born and died in 1885. At age 45, Eliza gave birth to her eleventh and final child, Charles Albert in 1886.

A lifelong Christian, Eliza had a pious upbringing in the United Brethren church with her parents. Her husband Henry was also devoutly religious and occasionally served as a local preacher. Prior to his death in 1915, Henry arranged his own funeral text and songs himself. "Together, they established a church in the home, where services were held." 2 They were members of the German Methodist Church and later Eliza united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Clatonia where she still held membership at her death.

Soon after getting settled in Clatonia, Eliza started planting flowers and vegetable gardens. Over the years, she became known for her beautiful gardens. She took a serious interest in their orchard, and she taught herself how to develop different species of fruits from seeds. Her fondness of birds and love of nature in general were a characteristic to be admired in her.

Eliza Menke is credited with having one of the first mechanical chick-incubators and brooders in her part of the country.3  Articles in several Nebraska newspapers in February of 1897 are touting the "latest thing in the chicken business is the electric incubator".4 The 1885 agriculture census shows Eliza had 110 chickens and 200 dozen eggs were produced in 1884. Those numbers likely increased around 1900. Eliza was also one of the earliest people in the area to operate a sorghum mill. She was a pioneer in the truest sense of the word, and as matriarch of the family was likely an inspiring roll model.

Education, science and religion were topics that were held in high regard in the Menke household. Henry Menke, Jr graduated from the Peru Normal and later the University of Chicago. He designed and patented a revolving fan in 1885. He also became an ordained Minister of the Gospel and preached in Iowa, Missouri and Michigan. Eliza's other step-son John Frederich ran a successful grocery business for over 30 years after he moved back to Portsmouth, Ohio. Eliza's son George Edward also became a U.S. Patent holder in 1912 for a railroad loading device, and later invented a corn sheller he called a "Little GEM" (his initials). Daughter Mathidle was a switchboard operator for the telephone company she and her husband ran.

With Eliza's large family, many big family reunions were held at her home. She was known for her hospitality and visitors were always well entertained. Besides her own children, she had many nieces and nephews in Nebraska, some nearby and others out west. Her sister Mary became Mrs John Boggs and they raised their family near Tobias. Another sister Hannah and her husband Conrad Smith were residents in Garden County. In 1988, 72 descendants of these three sisters gathered for a reunion in Firth.

The Menke farm in Section 33 was home to Eliza until after her 90th birthday and she celebrated her 100th birthday at the place she helped build and knew for 62 years. She was able to live by herself until after that milestone. In her final year and a half on earth, as her health began to fail, the Anna Rohe Nursing home in Lincoln became her home. Her strong heart kept going for 102 years, 8 months and 17 days, then beat for the last time on February 2, 1944.

Descendants of Eliza & Henry Menke are: Ann Caroline "Carrie" & Louis Kloepper; Mathilde & WilliamH Daubendiek; Katharine & John Henry Wayman; Eliza Jane & Richard Kiene; Rosa & Lewis Wayman; George E & Kathryn (Detmer) Menke; Nettie & Franklin Steinmeyer; Charles Albert & Charlotte "Lottie" (Roscoe) Menke and their many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a continuing line of generations to come. Eliza had outlived her husband, all of her siblings, her four step-children, five of her own children and eight grandchildren. The Menke farm was sold at auction on August 5, 1944 sixty-five plus years after Henry & Eliza first set foot on the land.

OBITUARY
Mrs. Mary Boggs
March 28, 1930 marked the passing of another of the old settlers of Nebraska in the death of Mary M. Boggs at the home of her son, Charles W., in Tobias.
Mary M. Knapp was born in Ohio on September 22, 1848 and left this world for the eternal world on March 28, 1930 at the ripened age of 81 years, 6 months, and 6 days.
On October 17, 1871, she was united in marriage to John W. Boggs, and to them were born nine children, seven of whom are now living; Charles W., of Tobias; George H., of Cummingsville, Nebr.; Mrs. J. S. Rickard of Guide Rock, Nebr.; Albert J. of Grand Forks, Minn.; Walter W. of Woodbine, Kas.; Mrs. Arthur Stearn of Denton, Nebr.; and Mrs. Emma Alberts of Hallam, Nebr.  There are also twenty-seven grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.  The husband preceded her in death about twenty-seven years ago.
Mrs. Boggs was raised by German parents in the Lutheran faith, but later united with the Methodist Church.
In the year 1884 she came to Nebraska where she has since lived.  For several years she has made her home with her son, Charles, in Tobias, at which place the Messenger of Death found her.
"MOTHER
You painted no Madonnas on chapel walls in Rome
But with a touch diviner you lived one in your home
You wrote no lofty poems that critics counted art,
But with a nobler vision you lived them in your heart
You carved no shapeless marble to some high soul design
But with a finer sculpture you shaped this soul of mine
You built no great cathedrals that centuries applaud
But with a grace exquisite your life cathedraled God

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Most Census Records for an Ancestor

“Saturday Night Genealogy Fun”  is a feature of Randy Seaver’s Genea-Musings blog.  I’m participating in this week’s challenge, which is:

"1) Do you know which of your ancestors appears the most times in the Federal Census records?  How many years?  Are there duplicate entries?

2)  Describe that ancestor’s entries in the records in a blog post of your own, in a comment to this blog post, or on Facebook or Goggle+."

Without a doubt, my ancestor listed the most times in the Federal Census was Eliza (Knapp) Menke, who lived to be 102 years old.  I’ve found her in every Federal census from 1850 to 1940.

1850 – District #133, Vernon Township, Scioto County, Ohio.  The household is listed as: (Head) Henry Knapp, age 44, Laborer; (Mother) Caroline, age 37; (son) Fredrick, age 14; (son) Lewis, age 9; (daughter) Eliza, age 7; (son) Henry, age 8; (daughter) Mary.  On the next page but included in this household was Wendel Stop, age 30, Laborer.   All of these people were born in Germany except the youngest – Mary.

1860 – Elizabeth Township, Lawrence County, Ohio.   The household (Dwelling #1546, Family #1505) is listed as:  (Head) Henry, age 52, Miner, Personal Estate $800, born in Hanover, can’t read or write; (Mother) Caroline, age 47, born Hanover, can’t read or write; (son) Lewis, age 19, occupation is difficult to read,  born Hanover; (daughter) Louisa, age 17, Servant, born Hanover; (son) Henry, age 14, born Hanover; (daughter) Mary, age 11, born Hanover; (daughter) Hannah, age 9, born Ohio; (son) August, age 7, born Ohio; (son) George, age 3, born Ohio.

1870 – Decatur Township, Lawrence County, Ohio.  Dwelling #161, Family #158.  Listed as:  (Head) Mink, Henry, age 34, Iron ore miner, born Hanover, Citizen; (Mother) Eliza, age 27, born Hanover; (son) John, age 11, born Ohio; (son) Henry, age 8, born Ohio; (daughter) Elizabeth, age 6, born Ohio; (daughter) Caroline, age 2, born Ohio; (daughter) Mary, age 8/12, born Ohio.  Everyone’s parents were both of foreign birth.  Both parents are able to read and write.  The children are not marked as attending school, but on the entire census page there are no marks that I can see under that column.

1880 – Clatonia, Gage County, Nebraska.  Family #96;  The household is listed as:  (Head) Menke, Henry, age 47, Farmer, born Prussia;  (Mother) Louise, age 38, born Prussia; (son) Fredrick, age 21, school teacher, born Prussia; (son) Henry, age 18, Farmer, born Ohio; (daughter) Caroline, age 12, born Ohio; (daughter) Mary, age 10, born Ohio; (daughter) Mathilda, age 8, born Ohio; (daughter) Katherine, age 6, born Ohio; (daughter) Luise, age 2, born Ohio; (daughter) Rosa, age 1, born Ohio.  Almost everyone on this census page has a mark under the columns “Cannot Read” and “Cannot Write”, but I think the enumerator crossed off the “not” part of “Cannot”.   Caroline, Mary and Mathilda attended school.

1890 – If this Federal census record existed it should show Eliza still married to Henry Menke, living in Clatonia, Nebraska, with three more children – George Edward, age 9; Nettie, age 7; and Charles Albert, age 4.

1900 – Clatonia, Gage County, Nebraska.  Dwelling #109, Family #110.  (Head) Henry Menke, born DEC, 1832; age 67, married 33 years, born Germany, Immigrated in 1859, 41 years in US, Farmer, can read & write, Owns Farm mortgage free, Farm #114; (Mother) Lisa, born MAY 1843, age 57, 8 children, 7 living, born Germany, Immigrated in 1859, 41 years in US, can read & write; (daughter) Rosa, born JAN 1879, age 21, single, born Ohio; (son) Edward, born APR 1881, age 19, single, born Nebraska; (daughter) Nettie, born APR 1883, age 17, single, born Nebraska; (son) Albert, born NOV 1887, age 12, born Nebraska.  Ancestry has this family’s last name indexed as “Schenke”.

1910 – Clatonia, Gage County, Nebraska.  Dwelling #122, Family #124.  The household is listed as:  (Head) Menke, Henry, age 77, married twice, 43 years, born Germany, Immigrated in 1853, Naturalized, able to read and write, Owns house;  (Wife) Eliza, age 67, married once, 43 years, 11 children, 8 living, born Germany.  Their youngest son, Albert is living next door to them.

1920 – Clatonia, Gage County, Nebraska.  Dwelling #124, Family #127.  (Head) C Albert Menke, Rents, age 33, parents born Germany, Farmer; (Wife) Charlotte I, age 32, parents born New York; (son) Harold W, age 12; (son) Victor L, age 10; (son) Willis H, age 8; (son) Cecil H, age 7; (daughter) Elsie A, age 5; (son) Raymond E, age 4; (son) Kenneth K, age 2; (daughter) Irene I, age 4/12; Louise K, Mother, age 78, Widow, Immigrated 1860, Naturalized 1865, born Germany; Albert C Wayman, Boarder, age 23, single.  Everyone other than Louise was born in Nebraska.

1930 – Clatonia, Gage County, Nebraska.  Dwelling #15, Family #15.  (Head) Eliza Menke, Owns farm, lives on farm, age 87, Widow, married at 24, able to read and write, Immigrated in 1865.  She is living alone.  Ancestry has her indexed as “Manke”.

1940 – Clatonia, Gage County, Nebraska.  Household #19, Owns, Value of home $1000, lives on farm, (Head) Eliza Menke, age 98, Widow, highest grade of school is 0, born Ohio, unable to work, received income of $50 or more from sources other than money wages or salary.; (daughter) Eliza Kiene, age 62, Divorced, highest grade of school is 8th, born Ohio, doing Home work, received income of $50 or more from sources other than money wages or salary.

I get 9 not counting the non-existent 1890 census.  Eliza stayed on her farm until about 1942 and died in the Anna Rohe Nursing home in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1944.

Heinrich Knapp was born on Christmas Day in 1805 in Germany.  About 1846, he brought his family to America, settling in southern Ohio.  Heinrich, or Henry as he became in America, worked in the ore digging and mining industry.   By 1850 he was in Vernon Township, Scioto County, and by 1860 in Elizabeth Township, Lawrence County where his family remained for many years.  He died January 15, 1892 at age 86 in Powellsville, Ohio and is buried in St John's Lutheran Church Cemetery.  This short paragraph ran in the Portsmouth Daily Times on January 23, 1892.  Ancestry has several years of the Portsmouth Daily Times, but not for the year 1892.  The Portsmouth Public Library emailed me the page this was on, but they didn't find an obituary or death notice for Caroline.

Caroline Schukky was born December 17, 1813 in Hanover, Germany.  She was the mother of 8 children.  She died on September 4, 1895 at age 81, and is buried beside her husband.

Heinrich and Caroline were married March 8, 1839 in Germany.  Their children were:

Friedrich Knapp was born on January 1, 1837 in Germany.  Friedrich married Elizabeth (last name unknown).  They had seven children:  George, Anna, Caroline, William, John, Henry and Mary.  Friedrich died at only 44 years old on November 20, 1881 in Ohio.

Louis Knapp was born in Hanover, Germany on September 8, 1840.  Louis followed his father into the Ore business.  There is a nice biography of him in "The History of Scioto County" written by Nelson Evans.  On January 25, 1865, he married Mary Fitzsimmons, at Empire Furnace, Ohio.  They were the parents of seven children:  Lizzie, May, Anna, Joseph, Charles, Ruby and James.  In August, 1882 he married Hannah Fitzer and they had 2 sons, John and Oliver.  Louis died in Cook County, Illinois on May 7, 1923 at age 82.

Elizabeth "Eliza" Knapp, my Great Great Grandmother, came into this world on May 15, 1841 in Wurttemberg, Germany.   She married Henry Menke on January 13, 1865 in Scioto County, Ohio.  She was the mother of 11 children:  Caroline, John, Mary, Matilde, Katherina, Eliza, Rosa, Edward, Nettie, Charles and Lewis.  Eliza lived to be 102 years old, dying in Lincoln, Nebraska on February 2, 1944.  She was survived by 30 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Henry Ernst Christian Knapp was born on September 22, 1845 in Hanover, Germany.  His first marriage was to Catherine Elizabeth Hobstettler with whom he had 10 children.  Catherine died in 1894 and Henry married Mrs. Elizabeth Mehl in 1896.  Henry's children were:  Adam, Fred, Henry, Callie, Charles, John, Jacob, George and 2 more whose names I can't read because of a smudge in the newspaper with his obituary.  There is a nice family photo on Henry's findagrave memorial here.

Mary Knapp shared a birthday with her brother Henry on September 22, born three years later in 1848.  She was the first child in the family born in the United States.  She was married to John W. Boggs on October 17, 1871 in Ohio.  They moved to Nebraska sometime before 1881.  Nine children were born to them:  Charles, George, Albert, Caroline, Rosa, Elizabeth, Walter, Jennie and Emma.  Mary died in Tobias, Nebraska on March 28, 1930 having reached 81 years old.  She was survived by 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Hannah Charlotte Knapp was born March 23, 1849 in Clinton Furnace, Scioto County. She married Conrad Smith on February 6, 1869 in Lawrence County.  About 1893 they moved to Nebraska, joining her two sisters already there.  Their 11 children were:  Caroline, Frederick, Henry, Anna, John, Mary, Elizabeth, William, George, Carl and Viola.  Hannah died on September 5, 1928 in Garden County, Nebraska at age 79.  She was survived by 53 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

August Knapp was born March 21, 1852 in Ohio and was deceased by 1921.

George D. Knapp was born August 28, 1857 in Ohio.  George was married to Elizabeth Schmidt.   He died on December 20, 1921 in Empire Furnace, Ohio.  He was 64 years old.

I want to find the German marriage record for Henry & Caroline, and birth records for their children.  Also any immigration record for the family.  I would like to get to Portsmouth, Ohio someday to do some work there and see the area where Henry Knapp's family once lived.

A few years ago I corresponded with a granddaughter of Hannah Smith and shared information with her.  It would be great to hear from another descendant of Henry & Caroline Knapp.

Tombstone Tuesday - BOGGS

Mary Knapp Boggs is buried in the Clatonia Cemetery, Clatonia, Nebraska along with two of her children.  Daugher Elizabeth Ann was 5 years old.  Son Walter Ward was 68.    Her husband John died about 1903, but he doesn't appear to be buried in Clatonia.  I don't know when or where he died.

Mary was the daughter of Henry & Caroline Knapp and the sister of my Great Great Grandmother Eliza Menke.

Age 27 had her first child
Age 38 moved from Ohio to Nebraska
Age 45 had her last child

How does someone live that long?!

Eliza's parents were Heinrich Knapp and Caroline Schukky.  She grew up in the area of Portsmouth, Ohio.  They were with a United Brethren church there, her parents are buried in St John's Lutheran Church cemetery.  She had brothers Frederick, Lewis, Henry, August and George and sisters Mary and Hannah.  Both of her sisters moved to Nebraska also and lived near her around Clatonia for several years.  Hannah married Conrad Smith and Mary married John Boggs. I've just interrupted myself writing this post by spending a couple of hours finding Mary & John Boggs in census records.  I haven't checked on her brothers, but that can wait, I want to get this finished.  I wonder how often she saw her parents after she moved to Nebraska.  They lived another 10 plus years after that.  How expensive was it to travel by train?

Eliza married Henry Menke on January 13, 1867 in Portsmouth, Ohio and immediately became a mother to 4 children ages 2 to 11.  Henry & Eliza and their family traveled by boat on the Ohio river to Cincinnati and then took a train to Atchison, Kansas, then probably went by wagon to Clatonia, Nebraska in the spring of 1879.  If they homesteaded their land, there would have been nothing there when they arrived.  Nevertheless, it became her Tara.  She lived there well into her 90's.  As God as her witness, she never went hungry!

She was known for her beautiful flower gardens, extensive vegetable gardens and orchards.  She had the first mechanical chick incubator and brooder and she was the earliest operator of a sorghum mill in her part of the country.  In her obituary it said "She led a life of feverish activity.  How she held up under the strain, doubtless puzzled many."

The Beatrice Times for Women, Feb. 16, 1944 included this poem in her obituary, "in the words of Rozelle Montgomery:
You are not dead - Life has but set you free!
You have but passed beyond where we can see.
For us who know you, dread of age is past!
You took life, tiptoe, to the very last;
It never lost for you it's lovely look;
You kept your interest in its thrilling book;
To you Death came no conqueror;
in the end - you merely smiled to greet another friend"

I have a picture of her, but I scanned it from a book and I probably can't post it here.  It's very grainy anyway, I don't know how to photoshop.

So, what was her secret to long life?  Was it her strong faith?  Was it because she kept busy and was always interested in new things?  She must have had a low stress level.  At any rate, she kept breathing for 102 years!

Henry Menke from Germany to Nebraska

That opening paragraph from a biography of my Great-great Grandfather, Henry Menke,
is a pretty impressive introduction.  Just so it won't bug you, the cut off sentence there goes on to say "one of the representative agriculturists and stock-growers of Gage county..."  It's from the book "The History of Gage County, Nebraska", by Hugh J. Dobbs, published in 1918.  He was born in Hanover, Germany December 4, 1832 and died in Clatonia, Nebraska September 21, 1915.  I believe he came with his parents, but I have yet to determine who they were.  This book is one source I have.  I don't know how Mr. Dobbs got the information for his biography.  It says that "he was a youth at the time of the family immigration to America, his father having previously taken part in the revolutionary movement in Germany.  The family home was established in Ohio, where the parents passed the remainder of their lives, as sterling pioneers of the old Buckeye state."  Sure sounds like they died in Ohio, so there must be some record of them there.

This may be his family from the 1860 Ward 11, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH census:
Menke, Henry, age 32, Laborer, born Hanover
Menke, Mary, age 33, born Oldenburg
Menke, Lina, age 4, born Ohio  (Emma or Ellen)
Menke, Frederick, age 1 4/12, born Ohio
Wanstrole, Joseph, age 13, born Ohio  (no idea of any connection)

The second house away is a possible choice for his parents:
Menke, John H, age 62, born Hanover
Menke, Angeline, age 60, born Hanover
Menke, Louisa, age 18, Seamstress, born Hanover

Most likely they were not in America in 1850 and I haven't found John & Angeline in 1870. From the biography, Henry married "Miss Mary Niemeyer of Ohio, she having been born in Germany".  Henry and Mary had 4 children, Emma or Ellen (1856-1929), John Frederick (1859-1938), Henry Jr (1862-1912) and Lizzie (1865-1924).  Mary died in 1866.  I've heard there was a cholera epidemic in Cincinnati about that time.  I want to find her death record and burial.  In an obituary for Henry from the DeWitt TImes-News, Henry married Maria Neuhaus in 1856, doesn't say where, but it says he came to American in 1859 and settled at Harrison Furnass Scioto County, Ohio.  It also says they had 5 children.  No mention of his parents and his children are not listed.

More information comes from the obituary of his son John Frederick Menke.  It says he was born in Hanover, Germany in 1859 and that he came to the US when six months of age.  His mother's name was Mary Niehaus and she died when he was seven years old - 1866.  An article from the Portsmouth Daily Times about John Frederick's grocery business says that he was born in Germany and they "landed in Baltimore, having been on the ocean for 11 weeks and 3 days".  With so much detail I would believe John Frederick was born in Germany, so do I have the wrong family in the 1860 census?  I'm not sure they were ever in Cincinnati.  They should have landed in Baltimore in about October 1859, but I have had no luck with passenger lists.

Henry married Eliza KNAPP January 13, 1867 in Scioto Co., Ohio.  They had 11 children:

Ann Caroline (1868-1946) married Louis Kloepper
John (1869-1869)
Mary (1870-1889)
Matilda (1872-1969) married William H. Daubendiek
Katherina (1874-1943) married John H Wayman
Eliza Jane (1877-1974) married Richard Kiene
Rosa (1879-1948) married Lewis Wayman
George Edward (1881-1941) married Kathryn Detmer
Nettie (1883-1962) married Franklin Steinmeyer
Lewis (1885-1885)
Charles Albert (1886-1965) - my Great Grandfather

If he really used the name John twice, I think it's a good possibility that his father's name was John.

In 1870, Henry and family are in Lawrence Co., Ohio.  By 1880 they had moved to Clatonia, Gage Co., Nebraska where he lived out his life.  The biography by Dodd says "He was a man of strong intellectuality, well fortified in his convictions concerning public policies, was a Republican in politics, and while he had no desire for official preferment he consented to serve for a number of years in the position of road overseer in his township. He was a most earnest and devout member of the German Methodist church, as is also his venerable widow, and he gave zealous and effective service as a local preacher of this denomination.  Ordering his life upon the highest plane of integrity and honor, he was essentially one of the world's productive workers during the course of a long and vigorous career"  He owned 160 acres in Section 33 of Clatonia township.  I'm looking forward to the Nebraska land patents records becoming available online at the Bureau of Land Management website since it takes a vacation day to go to a court house to do land records research.  Darn job.

It's interesting, the obit says "His funeral text and songs were arranged by him in advance." Those things must have been important to him.  This little clipping from the Clatonia Observer is kinda funny.  I'm sure he wasn't boasting, just letting it be known what he thought!

This is Henry's signature from his will.  I wish it was common practice for a person to divulge their personal history in their wills!  I also have the marriage certificate of Henry and Eliza.  So I need to find death records for the 1860's in Ohio.  Most of what I've seen seems to be from Catholic church records.  Also I want to find the passenger list hoping to find him listed with parents. Whenever I find a copy of the book "History of Gage County, Nebraska", I will put it in my old trunk in the attic.

Director Alexander Payne has just filmed a movie I'm anxious to see called "Nebraska". He's a fellow Nebraskan and I think the movie will be realistic in depicting Nebraska's people.  I am proud to be a 4th generation Nebraskan, proud to be interested in my family history and proud to be a descendant of Henry Menke.
